A clean Breville espresso machine doesn’t just look better on the counter. Regular maintenance helps protect coffee flavor, keeps the steam wand working properly, prevents coffee oils from accumulating in the brewing system, and reduces problems caused by mineral scale.
The confusing part is that βcleaning your Brevilleβ can mean several completely different things.
You might need to:
- Rinse the portafilter after making espresso
- Purge the group head
- Wipe and purge the steam wand
- Perform a clear-water backflush
- Run a cleaning-tablet cycle
- Descale the water system
- Clean the built-in grinder
- Replace the water filter
These jobs are not interchangeable.
Most importantly:
A cleaning cycle is not the same thing as descaling.
A cleaning or backflush cycle primarily deals with coffee oils and residue around the brew path. Descaling targets mineral deposits left behind by water inside the machine. Breville treats these as separate maintenance procedures on many current models, including the Barista Pro.
The exact procedure also depends on which Breville espresso machine you own.
A Bambino does not use exactly the same button sequence as a Barista Express. A Barista Pro displays maintenance instructions on its LCD. Touchscreen machines guide you through cleaning from their menus, while Oracle models have their own procedures.
So the most important rule in this guide is:
Use the cleaning procedure for your exact model number.
Here’s what every Breville owner should know.
β‘ Breville Espresso Machine Cleaning at a Glance
| Maintenance Task | What It Removes | When to Do It |
|---|---|---|
| Rinse portafilter & basket | Grounds and coffee oils | After each brewing session |
| Purge group head | Loose grounds and residue | Before/after brewing as recommended |
| Wipe & purge steam wand | Milk residue | Immediately after every use |
| Empty drip tray | Coffee and wastewater | Regularly / when full |
| Clear-water backflush | Coffee oils and loose residue | On supported models, often after brewing sessions |
| Cleaning-tablet cycle | Coffee oils in internal brew path | When machine indicates |
| Descaling | Mineral scale | When machine indicates / based on water conditions |
| Clean grinder burrs | Coffee particles and oils | Periodically |
| Replace water filter | Helps reduce impurities and scale | According to your model/filter schedule |
Breville itself distinguishes between group-head cleaning products, steam-wand cleaner, machine descaler, and water filters because each addresses a different maintenance problem.
π§Ό Cleaning vs. Descaling: What’s the Difference?
This is the most important concept to understand.
Cleaning Removes Coffee Residue
Coffee contains oils.
Every time you brew espresso, small amounts of:
- Coffee oils
- Fine coffee particles
- Grounds
- Residue
can remain around the basket, shower screen, group head, and internal coffee path.
Over time, old coffee oils can contribute stale or unpleasant flavors.
That’s why Breville machines may ask you to run a cleaning cycle or FLUSH cycle using a cleaning tablet.
Descaling Removes Mineral Deposits
Water contains dissolved minerals.
As water is heated repeatedly, minerals can accumulate inside:
- Heating systems
- Internal tubing
- Valves
- Water pathways
This buildup is called scale.
Hard water produces scale faster than softer water. Breville notes that mineral buildup can reduce water flow, brewing temperature, machine performance, and ultimately espresso quality.
A cleaning tablet does not replace descaler.
Descaler does not replace a coffee-oil cleaning cycle.
Think:
Coffee residue β cleaning cycle
Mineral buildup β descaling
β What to Clean After Every Espresso
The easiest way to keep a Breville machine clean is to prevent residue from becoming a major problem.
A basic post-coffee routine takes only a few minutes.
1. Knock Out the Coffee Puck
Remove the portafilter and discard the used coffee.
Don’t leave a wet puck sitting in the machine for hours.
2. Rinse the Filter Basket
Rinse away loose coffee and oils with hot water.
Breville specifically recommends cleaning the portafilter and filter baskets after brewing sessions on machines such as the Bambino Plus.
3. Rinse the Portafilter
Coffee oils collect inside and around the spouts as well as on the basket.
Rinse thoroughly and let it dry.
4. Purge the Group Head
Run a short amount of water through the group head without coffee to flush away loose grounds.
Breville recommends regular group-head purging on several machines, including the Barista Pro and Barista Touch.
5. Wipe the Shower Screen
Once the machine is cool enough to work around safely, wipe visible coffee residue from the shower-screen area with a clean damp cloth.
6. Clean the Steam Wand
Do this immediately after steaming milk.
We’ll cover that next.
π₯ How to Clean the Breville Steam Wand
Milk residue is easiest to remove while it is fresh.
Once milk dries onto a hot steam wand, cleaning becomes much harder.
After every milk drink:
- Lower or move the steam wand into a safe position.
- Wipe the outside immediately with a clean damp cloth.
- Purge steam through the wand to clear milk from the tip.
- Check that all steam holes remain open.
Breville specifically recommends cleaning the Barista Express steam wand after each use, and similar guidance applies throughout its steam-equipped espresso lineup.
If the Steam Wand Becomes Blocked
Don’t keep running the machine indefinitely hoping pressure will force the obstruction out.
Your machine should have a manufacturer-approved procedure for removing and cleaning the steam tip.
Breville supplies cleaning tools with many machines specifically for clearing blocked steam holes.
Follow the procedure for your model before removing components.
Automatic Steam Wands Still Need Cleaning
Machines such as:
- Bambino Plus
- Barista Touch
- Barista Touch Impress
- Oracle models
may automatically purge the steam wand.
That helps.
It does not eliminate the need to wipe milk from the exterior.
The Barista Touch Impress, for example, still requires regular wand cleaning even though the machine provides guided maintenance.
πΏ How to Clean the Group Head
The group head is where hot water enters the coffee puck.
Coffee residue can collect around the:
- Shower screen
- Group seal
- Portafilter locking area
After brewing:
- Remove the portafilter.
- Run water briefly through the group head if recommended for your model.
- Wipe visible residue away.
- Keep the area where the portafilter locks in free from grounds.
Breville’s current maintenance guidance recommends routine group-head purging on machines including the Barista Pro, Touch, Express Impress, and Oracle.
If coffee grounds remain around the group seal, they can interfere with proper sealing when you lock in the portafilter.
π What Is a Clear-Water Backflush?
A clear-water backflush cleans parts of the brewing path by sending water against the closed cleaning disc and allowing the machine’s valve system to release it.
Breville recommends clear-water backflushing after coffee-making sessions on several models, including the:
- Barista Express
- Barista Express Impress
- Barista Touch
- Oracle
- Oracle Touch
The general setup commonly involves:
- Putting the appropriate cleaning disc into the filter basket
- Locking the portafilter into the group head
- Running the model-specific backflush procedure
- Emptying and rinsing the drip tray afterward
Important: Don’t Assume Every Breville Uses the Same Procedure
βBackflush your espresso machineβ is common online advice.
But the correct disc, button sequence, and frequency depend on the machine.
Always confirm that your exact model supports the procedure and follow Breville’s instructions for it.
π What Is the Breville Cleaning-Tablet Cycle?
Periodically, water alone is not enough to remove accumulated coffee oils.
That’s where the machine’s dedicated cleaning cycle comes in.
On compatible Breville machines, this typically involves:
- Cleaning disc
- Filter basket
- Cleaning tablet
- Portafilter
- Automatic cleaning or FLUSH program
The machine pushes water through the group-head system in a controlled sequence to remove coffee residue.
Cleaning Tablets Are for Coffee Oils
They are not primarily for mineral scale.
That’s why many machines have a second, completely separate DESCALE program.
π¨ What Does the CLEAN / DESCALE Light Mean on a Barista Express?
The Barista Express deserves special attention because one indicator can communicate two different maintenance needs.
On the current Barista Express manual:
Flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light = cleaning cycle required
Solid CLEAN / DESCALE light = descaling required
That’s extremely useful to know.
Seeing the words CLEAN / DESCALE does not mean you should automatically put descaler in the machine.
First look at what the indicator is doing.
Barista Express Cleaning Cycle
The current manufacturer procedure uses:
- Filter basket
- Cleaning disc
- Cleaning tablet
- Portafilter
and a specific button combination to start the approximately five-minute cleaning process.
Because control sequences can change between versions and regions, use your own BES870 manual or Breville’s current tutorial when starting the cycle.
𧽠How to Clean a Breville Barista Express
The Barista Express has more components to maintain than a Bambino because it includes a grinder.
Your maintenance routine should cover:
After Every Brewing Session
- Empty coffee puck
- Rinse basket
- Rinse portafilter
- Purge group head
- Wipe shower screen area
- Clean steam wand
- Empty drip tray when necessary
Breville also recommends a clear-water backflush after brewing sessions.
When the CLEAN / DESCALE Light Flashes
Run the cleaning-tablet cycle.
When the CLEAN / DESCALE Light Stays Solid
Run the descaling procedure.
Periodically
Clean the:
- Bean hopper
- Conical burr grinder
- Grind outlet
- Water tank
- Drip tray
- Exterior
Breville provides separate tutorials for virtually every one of these jobs, including the portafilter, shower screen, drip tray, grinder burrs, steam wand, water filter, cleaning cycle, descaling, and clear-water backflush.
For more about the machine itself, see our Breville Barista Express Review: Features, Pros, Cons & Who It’s Best For.
βοΈ How to Clean the Built-In Breville Grinder
This section applies to grinder-equipped models such as:
- Barista Express
- Barista Express Impress
- Barista Pro
- Barista Touch
- Barista Touch Impress
- Oracle models
Coffee particles and oils gradually accumulate in the grinder.
That can affect:
- Grind consistency
- Coffee freshness
- Grinder output
- Dosing
Breville provides dedicated burr-cleaning procedures for these machines.
A typical maintenance process involves safely shutting down the machine, removing beans and the hopper as directed, accessing the removable upper burr, and brushing accumulated grounds from the grinder.
Don’t Pour Water Into the Grinder
Grinder burrs and internal grinder mechanisms should not be treated like a filter basket.
Keep water away from electrical grinder components unless your exact manual explicitly instructs otherwise.
Use the supplied grinder brush and manufacturer procedure.
Extremely Oily Beans Increase Cleanup
Very shiny dark-roasted beans can leave more oily residue around:
- Hopper
- Burrs
- Grinder chute
If your grinder becomes sticky or beans stop feeding smoothly, bean oils may be contributing.
π± How to Clean the Breville Bambino
The Bambino is simpler because it has no built-in grinder.
Your regular routine should focus on:
- Portafilter
- Filter baskets
- Group head
- Shower screen
- Steam wand
- Drip tray
- Water tank
Breville recommends rinsing the Bambino portafilter and baskets in hot water after use to remove coffee oils.
Bambino Descale Alert
Breville’s current Bambino tutorial states that a continuously flashing 2 CUP button signals that the machine needs its descale procedure.
This is another reason not to copy a Barista Express cleaning sequence onto a Bambino.
The machines communicate maintenance differently.
π₯ How to Clean the Breville Bambino Plus
The Bambino Plus is particularly important because cleaning and descaling have separate alerts.
Cleaning Alert
When the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons flash together, Breville directs you to perform the cleaning cycle.
Descale Alert
When the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and STEAM buttons flash alternately, the machine needs descaling.
That distinction is exactly why generic instructions can cause confusion.
Automatic Steam Purge
After automatic milk texturing, the Bambino Plus purges its steam wand.
Still:
- Wipe milk off the wand immediately.
- Keep the tip clear.
- Empty the drip tray frequently, since auto-purging sends water into it.
Dishwasher Warning
The current Bambino Plus manual says not to clean its parts or accessories in a dishwasher. Clean components using the procedures specified in the manual instead.
π₯οΈ How to Clean the Breville Barista Pro
The Barista Pro makes maintenance easier to interpret because its LCD explicitly distinguishes:
FLUSH
from
DESCALE
The current manual states that the FLUSH cleaning cycle is separate from descaling.
When the Display Says FLUSH
Run the cleaning cycle using:
- Cleaning disc
- Cleaning tablet
- Portafilter
and select the machine’s FLUSH function.
When the Display Says DESCALE
Run the separate descale program.
The Barista Pro descaling cycle works through the coffee, hot-water, and steam pathways, followed by a rinse sequence.
Routine Barista Pro Care
Also remember to:
- Purge group head regularly
- Rinse portafilter
- Clean steam wand
- Clean grinder burrs
- Empty drip tray
- Maintain water filter
Breville recommends group-head purging before and after brewing sessions.
π± How to Clean a Barista Touch or Touch Impress
Touchscreen Breville machines make maintenance less mysterious because the interface can guide you through the required procedures.
The Barista Touch has dedicated instructions for:
- Cleaning cycle
- Descaling
- Clear-water backflush
- Group-head purge
- Filter-basket rinse
- Grinder cleaning
- Steam-wand cleaning
The newer Barista Touch Impress similarly includes guided options for:
- Group-head cleaning
- Descaling
- Clear-water backflush
- Steam-wand maintenance
- Grinder burr cleaning
Follow the Screen
If your machine provides an on-screen cleaning sequence, use it.
Don’t substitute a button combination you found for an older Barista Express.
One of the reasons you’re paying for the touchscreen is that it can walk you through model-specific maintenance.
π How to Clean Breville Oracle Machines
The Oracle family adds even more systems:
- Built-in grinder
- Automated dosing/tamping on applicable models
- Espresso brewing
- Steam system
- More complex internal plumbing
That makes regular maintenance particularly important.
Oracle Touch displays an on-screen message when a cleaning cycle is required and guides the user through the procedure.
Descaling is separate, and Breville provides a specific Oracle-series descaling process.
Breville also recommends clear-water backflushing after coffee-making sessions on Oracle and Oracle Touch machines.
Don’t improvise a descale procedure on an expensive Oracle.
Follow the machine’s screen and official manual.
π§ How to Descale a Breville Espresso Machine
Although the exact sequence varies, the general purpose of descaling is the same:
remove mineral buildup from the water system.
You’ll usually need:
- Manufacturer-approved descaling product
- Water
- Large empty container
- Access to the water tank
- Enough time for a complete descale and rinse cycle
Before Starting
Check your manual.
Some Breville models specifically instruct you to remove the water filter before adding descaling solution. The current Barista Express and Barista Pro instructions include this requirement.
During Descaling
The machine may route descaling solution through several paths, such as:
- Group head
- Hot-water outlet
- Steam system
Do not interrupt the process unless the manual instructs you to do so.
Rinse Thoroughly
After descaling, complete the entire manufacturer-specified rinse process with fresh water.
The Barista Pro, for example, includes a dedicated rinse cycle after its three-stage descale process.
π§ͺ Can You Descale a Breville With Vinegar?
I would not substitute vinegar, citric acid mixtures, or other homemade solutions unless the manual for your exact Breville model explicitly allows them.
Modern espresso machines contain:
- Valves
- Seals
- Tubing
- Heating components
- Sensors
- Different metals
A cleaning method that works on a kettle is not automatically appropriate for an espresso machine.
Breville sells and specifies dedicated machine descaler for its espresso equipment.
The safest approach is:
Follow Breville’s approved descale method for your model.
β° How Often Should You Descale a Breville Espresso Machine?
There isn’t one perfect schedule for every household.
Descaling frequency depends heavily on:
- Water hardness
- Machine usage
- Water filtration
- Model
- Maintenance history
Harder water can cause scale to accumulate faster. Breville specifically notes that water hardness affects scale buildup and even includes water-hardness setup on machines such as the Oracle Touch.
Best Rule
If your Breville has a descale alert:
Follow the alert.
If your machine doesn’t provide a sophisticated reminder, follow the schedule in its manual rather than relying on a generic βevery three monthsβ internet rule.
π° Do Breville Water Filters Eliminate Descaling?
No.
A water filter can help reduce impurities and scale formation.
It does not make the machine permanently scale-proof.
Breville specifically notes that the Barista Pro may still accumulate minerals even with its filter installed.
Filter Replacement Schedules Vary
Another example of model-specific maintenance:
Some Breville documentation for the Barista Express uses a roughly two-month replacement interval, while current tutorials for machines such as the Barista Pro, Touch, and Oracle specify approximately 90 days or 10.6 gallons for their filter systems.
So don’t assume every Breville filter follows the same calendar.
Check:
- Your filter type
- Your machine manual
- Your water hardness
𧽠How to Clean the Portafilter and Baskets Thoroughly
Daily rinsing prevents most buildup.
Occasionally, however, coffee oils can accumulate more stubbornly.
Check the basket holes against a light source.
If holes appear blocked:
- Use the supplied cleaning tool as directed.
- Follow Breville’s model-specific soaking procedure where permitted.
- Rinse thoroughly before brewing again.
The Barista Pro manual, for example, provides a cleaning-tablet soaking procedure for stubbornly blocked baskets.
Don’t assume every material should be soaked in every cleaning chemical.
Follow the instructions for the basket and portafilter supplied with your machine.
π§Ή How to Clean the Drip Tray
The drip tray collects more than visible coffee spills.
It may receive:
- Group-head rinse water
- Steam-wand purge water
- Backflush discharge
- Espresso drips
- Milk residue
Remove and empty it regularly.
Wash removable components with warm soapy water when permitted by your model’s instructions.
A machine with automatic steam purging may fill the tray faster than expected.
If you notice standing liquid with a stale coffee smell, you’ve waited too long.
β¨ How to Clean the Exterior
For the housing:
- Turn the machine off.
- Let hot surfaces cool.
- Use a soft damp cloth.
- Dry with a soft clean cloth.
Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive cleaners that can scratch stainless-steel or coated surfaces.
Breville’s Bambino Plus manual specifically warns against abrasive cleaners and cloths.
And obviously:
Never immerse the espresso machine, power cord, or plug in water.
π« What Shouldn’t Go in the Dishwasher?
Do not assume that because a component can get wet, it is dishwasher safe.
For example, Breville’s current Bambino Plus manual explicitly states that its parts and accessories should not be cleaned in the dishwasher.
The Bambino documentation also specifically identifies its portafilter as not dishwasher safe.
Other Breville models may have different instructions.
Before putting any of these in the dishwasher, check your manual:
- Portafilter
- Filter baskets
- Water tank
- Hopper
- Drip tray
- Milk jug
- Cleaning disc
- Grinder parts
When uncertain, hand washing according to the manufacturer instructions is the safer choice.
π Signs Your Breville Needs Cleaning
You shouldn’t wait until a machine looks filthy.
Possible maintenance clues include:
- CLEAN or FLUSH alert
- DESCALE alert
- Espresso tasting stale or unusually bitter
- Slow water flow
- Weak steam
- Steam holes blocked
- Coffee grounds around group seal
- Water leaking around portafilter
- Grinder output becoming inconsistent
- Heavy coffee-oil buildup
- Unusual noises
- Machine taking longer to heat
- Reduced hot-water flow
Not all of these symptoms mean βclean the machine.β
For example, slow espresso could be caused by an excessively fine grind rather than scale.
But maintenance is a sensible place to investigate when performance changes.
π A Simple Breville Cleaning Schedule
Here’s a practical routine that works as a general starting framework while still allowing your machine’s manual to take priority.
After Every Espresso Session
- Empty puck
- Rinse portafilter
- Rinse basket
- Purge group head
- Wipe shower-screen area if needed
- Wipe steam wand immediately
- Purge steam wand
- Clean spilled coffee and milk
Regularly
- Empty and wash drip tray
- Rinse water reservoir
- Wipe exterior
- Check basket holes
- Check steam tip
On Supported Models
Perform a clear-water backflush at the frequency Breville specifies.
For Barista Express, Touch, Express Impress, and Oracle models, Breville recommends it after coffee-making sessions.
When the Machine Requests It
Run the cleaning-tablet or FLUSH cycle.
When the Machine Requests It
Run the descale cycle.
Periodically on Grinder Models
Clean the hopper and conical burr system according to the Breville procedure.
According to Filter Instructions
Replace the water filter.
π© Common Breville Cleaning Mistakes
Mistake 1: Treating Cleaning and Descaling as the Same Thing
They’re not.
Coffee oils and mineral scale require different maintenance processes.
Mistake 2: Copying Another Model’s Button Sequence
A Bambino, Barista Express, Barista Pro, Touch, and Oracle do not all operate identically.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the Steam Wand
Milk residue can harden quickly and block steam holes.
Mistake 4: Leaving Coffee Pucks in the Portafilter
Discard them after brewing.
Mistake 5: Never Cleaning the Grinder
Built-in grinders also accumulate coffee particles and oils.
Mistake 6: Thinking a Water Filter Means You Never Descale
Filters reduce scale.
They don’t eliminate it forever.
Mistake 7: Putting Everything in the Dishwasher
Some Breville components are explicitly not dishwasher safe.
Mistake 8: Using Abrasive Cleaning Pads
They can permanently scratch exterior surfaces.
Mistake 9: Ignoring Maintenance Alerts
The machine is telling you something for a reason.
Mistake 10: Using Random Internet Descaling Recipes
Use the process and cleaning product appropriate for your machine.
β A Good Cleaning Kit to Keep on Hand
You don’t need a cabinet full of espresso chemicals.
For most Breville owners, useful maintenance supplies include:
- Soft microfiber cloths
- Small cleaning brush
- Steam-wand cleaning tool
- Cleaning disc supplied with machine
- Compatible cleaning tablets
- Manufacturer-approved descaler
- Replacement water filters where applicable
- Mild dishwashing liquid for permitted removable components
Breville currently sells separate products for group-head cleaning, steam-wand cleaning, descaling, and water filtration.
Again, those are different products because they solve different problems.
β Breville Espresso Machine Cleaning FAQ
How often should I clean my Breville espresso machine?
Rinse the portafilter and basket and clean the steam wand after each brewing session.
Deeper cleaning cycles and descaling should be performed when your machine indicates or according to the maintenance schedule in its manual.
What is the difference between CLEAN and DESCALE on Breville?
A cleaning cycle primarily removes coffee oils and residue from the brewing system.
Descaling removes mineral deposits caused by water.
On models such as the Barista Pro, Breville explicitly identifies its FLUSH cleaning program as separate from DESCALE.
What does a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE light mean on Barista Express?
On the current Barista Express manual, a flashing CLEAN / DESCALE indicator means the cleaning-tablet cycle is required.
What does a solid CLEAN / DESCALE light mean on Barista Express?
A solid CLEAN / DESCALE indicator means the machine requires descaling.
What does FLUSH mean on the Barista Pro?
FLUSH indicates the machine’s cleaning cycle for removing coffee residue.
It is separate from the Barista Pro’s DESCALE program.
How do I know when Bambino Plus needs cleaning?
Breville says the Bambino Plus requests its cleaning cycle when the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons flash.
How do I know when Bambino Plus needs descaling?
When the 1 CUP, 2 CUP, and STEAM buttons flash alternately, Breville says it is time to descale the Bambino Plus.
How do I know when the regular Bambino needs descaling?
Breville’s current Bambino tutorial identifies a continuously flashing 2 CUP button as the descale indicator.
Should I clean my portafilter after every use?
Yes.
Rinsing the basket and portafilter promptly keeps coffee oils and particles from building up. Breville explicitly recommends routine cleaning after brewing.
Should I purge the group head?
Yes, when recommended for your model.
Breville recommends group-head purging before and/or after brewing sessions on several machines.
Should I backflush my Breville after every use?
Some Breville models specifically recommend a clear-water backflush after coffee-making sessions, including the Barista Express, Barista Touch, Express Impress, and Oracle families.
Check your exact model instructions before assuming the procedure applies.
Can I use a cleaning tablet instead of descaling?
No.
Cleaning tablets target coffee oils and residue.
Descaler targets mineral deposits.
Can I use descaler instead of a cleaning tablet?
No.
These products have different jobs.
Can I descale a Breville with vinegar?
Use the descaling substance specified for your exact model rather than substituting homemade solutions without manufacturer approval.
Breville sells dedicated machine descaler for its espresso machines.
Does using filtered water mean I never have to descale?
No.
Filtration can reduce scale buildup, but minerals may still accumulate. Breville specifically notes that descaling can remain necessary even when a water filter is used.
How often should I replace a Breville water filter?
It depends on the machine and filter.
Some Barista Express documentation specifies approximately two months, while current Barista Pro, Touch, and Oracle guidance commonly uses about 90 days or 10.6 gallons.
Follow the schedule for your exact machine and filter.
Can Breville espresso-machine parts go in the dishwasher?
Not automatically.
The Bambino Plus manual, for example, specifically says not to clean its parts or accessories in the dishwasher.
Check your exact manual before putting removable components into a dishwasher.
How do I clean the Breville grinder?
Grinder-equipped Breville machines have removable components and manufacturer-specific burr-cleaning procedures.
Use the supplied cleaning brush and Breville’s instructions rather than introducing water into the grinder mechanism. Breville publishes dedicated burr-cleaning guides for the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Impress, and Oracle families.
Why is my Breville steam wand weak?
A blocked steam tip can reduce steam performance.
Allow the machine to cool as instructed, then follow the Breville procedure for removing and clearing the steam tip.
Scale or other mechanical problems can also affect steam, so cleaning the tip won’t solve every case.
Why does my espresso taste bad even after using fresh beans?
Coffee oil buildup, a dirty portafilter, mineral scale, grinder residue, stale water, or a dirty group head can all affect flavor.
Cleaning is therefore worth checking alongside grind size, dose, coffee freshness, and extraction technique.
π The Bottom Line
Cleaning a Breville espresso machine becomes much easier once you stop thinking of βcleaningβ as one job.
There are really several layers of maintenance.
After every brewing session, remove the coffee puck, rinse the basket and portafilter, purge the group head where appropriate, and keep coffee residue away from the shower screen.
After every milk drink, wipe and purge the steam wand immediately.
On machines that support it, a regular clear-water backflush helps remove residue from the espresso pathway.
When the machine requests a cleaning cycle, use the appropriate cleaning disc and tablet procedure to address accumulated coffee oils.
When the machine requests descaling, use the dedicated descale process to remove mineral buildup from the water and heating system.
And if your Breville includes a grinder, don’t forget that the hopper and burr system need maintenance too.
Most importantly, don’t treat every Breville machine as though it has the same cleaning controls.
The Barista Express distinguishes cleaning and descaling by whether its CLEAN / DESCALE light is flashing or solid.
The Barista Pro clearly separates FLUSH and DESCALE on the display.
The Bambino Plus uses different button-light patterns for cleaning and descaling.
The Touch and Oracle families provide more extensive guided maintenance through their interfaces.
When in doubt, find the model number on your machine and follow that machine’s current Breville manual.
A few minutes of routine care is much easier than trying to rescue a machine filled with old coffee oils, dried milk, blocked grinder residue, and years of mineral scale.
And your espresso will taste better for it.
