Espresso is not a type of coffee bean. It is not a particular roast. And it does not simply mean “very strong coffee.”

💪 Is Espresso Just Strong Coffee?
Not quite.
“Strong” can mean several different things.
Espresso is unquestionably more concentrated than drip coffee. A small amount contains a substantial concentration of dissolved coffee compounds, oils, acids, aromatics, and caffeine.

The story of espresso is largely a story of Italian engineering.

🏆 Achille Gaggia and the Birth of Modern Espresso
In the 1940s, Achille Gaggia developed a lever-operated espresso machine capable of producing much greater brewing pressure.
Instead of relying primarily on boiler steam pressure, the lever-and-piston system forced hot water through the coffee bed at considerably higher pressure.
The result was dramatically different.
For the first time, the beverage developed the thick golden foam we now call crema.

Angelo Moriondo’s 1884 machine helped introduce the idea of rapidly brewing coffee with steam and water. Luigi Bezzera developed the concept toward individual servings at the beginning of the 20th century. Desiderio Pavoni helped commercialize it. Achille Gaggia’s high-pressure lever machines brought crema and helped create what we recognize as modern espresso. And the pump-driven machines that followed transformed espresso into the foundation of café culture around the world.
Today, a typical specialty espresso may use roughly:
18–20 grams of coffee
to produce around:
36–40 grams of espresso
in something near:
25–30 seconds
at approximately:
9 bars of pressure
and around:
200°F.
But those numbers are starting points—not commandments. Modern espresso continues to evolve, and the Specialty Coffee Association itself has documented how dramatically professional recipes have changed over time.
What makes espresso special is its concentration.
A few tablespoons of liquid can contain extraordinary layers of aroma, sweetness, acidity, bitterness, texture, and flavor.
Drink it straight and you experience espresso in its purest form.
Add water and it becomes an Americano.
Add a little milk and it becomes a macchiato.
Balance it with milk and you have a cortado or flat white.
Add more steamed milk and you enter the world of cappuccinos and lattes.
Add chocolate and you have a mocha.
Pour it over gelato and suddenly coffee becomes dessert.
Few brewing methods have created so many drinks from such a small cup.
